Transgender (TG), Males who have Sex with Male (MSM), People who Inject Drugs (PWIDs) and Female Sex Workers (FSW) are key groups in the transmission of HIV/AIDS.


However, a recent study on Sero-prevalence has revealed that the highest HIV prevalence was found amongst Transgender (TG) people.

At a validation of terms of reference for key population technical working group workshop, which was held yesterday at the National Stadium lounge, the National HIV/AIDS Secretariat (NAS) Programmes Manager, Kemoh Mansaray revealed in his presentation that the study shows that TG has 22.4% infection rate, followed by MSM with 14.0% and PWID 8.5%. He also added that FSW has 6.7% and their clients have 2.9% infected with the virus.

The Chairman of the validation workshop, Edmund Makiu explained that the purpose of the Technical Working Group is because Sierra Leone understanding the extent of the epidemic among KPs by government and non-governmental organization continues to pose a challenge.

Adding that in order to mount a successful and sustainable national response to HIV and AIDS there is need for evidence-based informed policy, planning and programmes; in addition, providing a forum of KP related organizations to share their projects, progress and lessons.
