Veteran Journalists Union (VEJU), which was officially launched yesterday by President Ernest Bai Koroma, has said that the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) is their baby and that they have no intent kill the latter.

Christo Johnson was speaking Monday in a short interview with Sierraloaded ahead of the official launch of the union at the Miatta Conference Hall, Youyi Building.

Mr. Johnson said that they are founding members of SLAJ and that hitherto there were no criteria as to membership of the association, with the welfare of members paramount, adding that SLAJ now has a lot of workload as membership has increased.

He opined that because of increase burdened on the association, the old members decided to form an organisation specifically catering for veteran journalists, adding that registration of membership is reserved for those who have practiced for 25 to 60 years, with the individual having contributed to journalism in a respectable and responsible manner.

He disclosed that a special committee scrutinises new members before they are accepted to join the Union.
