As the clock ticks towards the presidential and parliamentary elections slated for 2018, what has clearly come out is that the month for the election is February but the actual date on which the elections would hold is still a mystery.

To quote the National Election Watch (NEW) it stated in a recent press statement that it is “calling on the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to declare by proclamation the specific date the elections will be conducted in February 2018.” This is because the “call underscores the fact that the date for the elections has implications for would-be aspirants currently occupying public offices.” One such occupier of public office is the current Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara otherwise nicknamed JFK by his yelibas or flatterers.

It is worth mentioning the fact that if we are to go by the NEW statement, then it is not unreasonable to suggest that JFK’s days are numbered if he actually intends to complete what his open intention for the presidency has been so far. It is no secret that there are at least eleven or more eager people within the All People’s Congress (APC) party with eyes on the presidency. Yet it seems as if it is only JFK who has the guts (perhaps with tacit approval/ support from the powers-that-be) to be going around the country discreetly campaigning in the guise of performing public functions.

Going back to the NEW press statement, it also says: “by law, for anyone to contest the election as Member of Parliament (or other elective office) such a person if paid from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) must resign his or her employment twelve (12) months before Election day.”

Against this background, it is also not unreasonable to state that one needs not be a law student to see and understand that unless JFK resigns latest February 2017 in compliance with what the constitution says with regard “anyone wishing to contest the election as Member of Parliament (or other elective office)” for such a person if paid from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) to resign his/her employment twelve (12) months prior to Election Day.

It is a fact that JFK is receiving salary from the CRF and so if he really intends to contest the presidency, the logical and accepted and legal thing for him to do is resign latest February 2017, otherwise if he continues to hold onto power after such a time, he would have demonstrated disrespect and disdain for the constitution. He is after all the Attorney General and Minister of Justice who is expected to first and foremost uphold the laws of the land and so he cannot and is not expected to do otherwise. This is why social commentators and political analysts say JFK’s days are numbered.

At this juncture, it is necessary to also name several others who are showing naked interest and have even declared their intentions to run for president in the February 2018 elections.

In the same way JFK is expected to resign his position if he is serious about taking up after President Koroma, then the likes of Alimamy Petito Koroma, Minkailu Mansaray, Dr. Kaifala Marah, Major (Rtd) Alfred Palo Conteh, Vice President Victor Bockarie Foh, Alhaji Alpha Khanu and others whose names do not readily come to mind are expected to follow suit.

In other words, they too must resign their respective positions for which they are being paid salary from the CRF, latest February 2017, otherwise they too would have shown disrespect and disdain for the laws of the land.
