Eight people have died in a gruesome accident on a highway linking Sierra Leone’s capital with the provinces.


The incident which occurred Thursday evening involved a truck and a commercial van, locally called Poda Poda, according to police sources.

A vehicle with registration number ALH 072 carrying passengers and over forty cows hit a Toyota Hiace Van AKD 173 and somersaulted in a ditch at Makambarie Village near Rogbere Bridge, killing 10 and injuring others. Both vehicles were headed for Freetown.

The driver of the said the truck, which was carrying human beings and cattle, was said to have suddenly lost control and the truck hit the van before running into a nearby bush.

According to a survivor, Hassan Bah, the truck was coming from Gbinti in Kabala and it was heading for Newton Cow Yard. Twenty cows were killed and the remaining ones are in critical conditions.

Inspector Turay said that the police are well aware of the gruesome nature of road accidents along the Masiaka Highway and that is why they have a strong policy against vehicles carrying goods and passengers “That accident would have been prevented if that vehicle would had entered my jurisdiction”, he said.

Mr. Allieu Barrie, Chairman National Butchers Union said that this kind of accident has never occurred in all his years in cow trading and he promised to put mechanisms in place to avoid future occurence.
